Take care of your back.

Sitting at a desk all day can be bad for your back. There are a couple things you can do to alleviate the pain or reduce your chance having back pain. Whenever you are sitting at your office furniture try to be keenly aware of your posture. On average, your body can tolerate being in one position for about 20 minutes before you feel the need to adjust. Try to get up and move about periodically or at least change your position. Your best bet in preventing back pain and injury is to be as fit as possible. To promote comfort and good posture while sitting, choose a chair that supports your back. Adjust the chair so that your feet stay flat on the floor. If your back hurts, stop activities that aggravate it.

A different kind of workout.

My husband is always on the go. The man literally never seems to sit still for a moment. Our neighbors tease us about sending him to their house if he ever runs out of projects at his own. Some people walk or run for exercise or to relieve stress while my husband fixes things. He is one the most athletic people I know when it comes to sports but you would never catch him in a gym. Give the man a garage packed with tool storage and he is set for a complete workout. I quite literally believe if one of these reality shows had overweight people spend a few weeks following my husband around they would get the work out of their lives. Hey, maybe there is a reality show in all of this  .

Is a new chair the answer?

For the last week my back has absolutely been throbbing. The only thing I have been doing different is spending a bit more time at my work station. Our computer chair has sorely been in need of being replaced but I just haven’t gotten around to it. Now the thought occurs to me that maybe my back is hurting because the chair just isn’t offering the right support. Maybe I should look into getting some new contemporary office furniture? It would be nice to be able to get some work done without constantly shifting to look for a comfortable position. I really can’t think of anything else I could have done to make my back hurt this much. My husband teases me that it is my old age and all the rain we have been getting!

What is it about paper cuts?

Yesterday I cut my hand on a stack of papers on our desk. This one little cut hurts as much as if someone had sliced my fingers with box cutters. All this has led me to wonder exactly why paper cuts hurt so much? I decided to research the topic a bit and found many other people who were wondering the exact same thing. The funny thing is that no one on the web seems to offer a concrete answer on the topic. Most of the information out there suggests that it is related to the depth of the cut that the paper makes that determines how painful it is. All I can say is that they all seem to hurt whether shallow or deep!

Help for families in crisis.

About a month ago a new family moved into the house next door. It hasn’t taken very long for the entire neighborhood to realize this is a family in crisis. The adults in the home clearly have addiction problems as not a day has gone by that they aren’t drinking. It really would be beneficial if someone in their immediate family encouraged them to seek alcohol and drug treatment services. Finding help for loved ones is a simplified process using the referral services available a 4Rehabilitation. No longer do families or those in crisis have to wade through the myriad of services on their own. 4Rehabilitation narrows down exactly what services suit the individual needs of each person creating personalized rehabilitation referral recommendations. It would be wonderful to see someone close to the family next door take charge and find help for them rather than wait for law enforcement or child protection agencies to intervene and force the issue legally.

Seasonal cooking.

The temperature in this part of the country has dropped dramatically in the last week. This had led me to switch up my cooking style. I have noticed over the years that how much I cook and what I cook is very much impacted by the seasons. In the summer I love to grill but that is pretty much the extent of my cooking. I am envious of people who have an outdoor kitchen because I know if I didn’t have to deal with a hot indoor kitchen I would definitely test many more seasonal recipes. Now that it is cooler I am once again making my family bigger meals. The downside to this is that my meals now tend not to be as healthy as the lighter fair that grilling often results in. I really need to find a balance between so that my waistline doesn’t pay the price over the winter months.

Do you think it is wrong?

My husband says I think to much and over analyze things. I am seriously considering sending drug rehab information anonymously to someone I know who is in desperate need of help. What I question is if this is the right thing to do? It is very easy with today’s internet technology to request information be sent to anyone in the world as long as you know their address. I don’t know if getting literature in the mail would really change this person’s perspective on their lifestyle. I would hope it might make them aware that other people think there is a problem and maybe open their eye’s just a bit to the situation. I know that confronting someone is probably the best route but since I really don’t know the person well that doesn’t seem feasible. Do you think receiving weekly or daily literature on the topic would have any impact on someone in the midst of an addiction problem?

It is a wives tale.

One of my relatives, who shall remain nameless, is obsessed with the fact that my son likes to sit in front of the television. It isn’t the fact that he is watching television that concerns her but rather his proximity to the television. Every time we watch a program she points how how my son is going to ruin his eyes by sitting so near the television. Our home is small and it isn’t like we have home theater seating. In reality the entire family is in very close proximity to the television. If her theory about sitting near the tv is true in theory we should all be going blind together. It doesn’t matter that the American Academy of Opthamology states that sitting right on top of the television does not damage your eyes there is no changing our loved one’s opinion on the matter. At least she loves us enough to fret about things like this.

How many do you own?

One of my passions in life is reading. Until recently my life was so consumed with parenting, working, and whatnot rarely did I find a spare moment to read. Life seems to have settled into a bit of a routine lately and I find myself once again turning to books to fill the spare moments of the day. I have come to the realization that I own far to many diet and weight loss books. When it comes right down to it these are the only books in my collection that never see the light of day. The next time I get the urge to buy the newest diet book on the market I think I will instead buy something from the New York Times bestseller list. I really have found that a truly good book is a great way to curb my appetite. I can’t eat if my hands are full with a great book.

Summer draws to a close.

It is really hard to believe that the end of summer is just around the corner. For the most part our summer was a great one. The heat never got so unbearable that we needed to turn on the air conditioning. Our ceiling fans ran almost constantly until the last week or so. The humidity has finally gone done and the temperature is a comfortable 70-80 degrees. As much as I love having my son home it is clear that he is ready for school to start again. We have exhausted ourselves trying to pack as much as we can into these last few weeks of summer vacation. I always feel like we laze about the first month of vacation and then go overboard at the end. It will be nice to have things get back to their normal routine and hopefully there is a great school year ahead of us!

Anyone involved in a neighborhood watch?

A couple people in my neighborhood have been batting around the idea of starting a neighborhood watch. I really don’t have a clue how to go about doing this. Do you just send out invitations and hope for the best? What concerns me is possible retaliation from those people who are being turned in as a result of the watch. I suppose it could be set up confidentially to a certain extent. If you have any experience with these types of organizations drop a comment and let me know how it has worked out for you. I would love to hear all sides of this topic. I really doubt most of the people around me would get involved but there is always the possibility I suppose.

Calgon take me away.

I would like to think that my family is as fun loving as the next family. We are not however noisy people. My children are usually in bed by 8 pm and we function best on a schedule. For the most part my neighborhood has been a quiet place to raise a family and we haven’t had many problems. About 2 years ago our neighbor turned his home into a rental property and moved out. Since then we have had 3 different sets of neighbors that have progressively gotten worse and worse. We are seriously thinking of putting our house on the market and looking into Wilmington NC real estate. I am going crazy living next to a never ending party. How on earth do people drive new cars, drink/smoke all day, never go to a job and afford to pay rent? Furthermore, how do they get away with leaving their children home alone for days at a time? Since they moved in 3 weeks ago we have had fans running 24/7 not for the heat but to drown out the noise of them shouting or the radio thumping. It kills me that we worked hard to save up and buy our home and have to live next to people like this. My nerves are a wreck because I am constantly wondering what the thumps and bumps are I keep hearing in the night. Because I am for the most part a laid back person maybe I sue them for emotional distress?
